Here, time stands still due to the buildings that have mostly kept their initial
looks and beauty. Although the oldest buildings in the current historical
city center of Timişoara have been built at the beginning of the 18th
century and gave it today's obvious baroque appearance, the city is
much older. Nevertheless, it has lost the battle with time, excepting a part
of the Huniade Castle, since neither the old town's medieval urban
structure, nor the buildings that existed before 1716 can be nowadays
seen anymore.
This is why, if you ask somebody who lives in Timişoara to send you a
representative picture of the city, they will widely smile with pride and
show you the Unification Square. This is the one place that tells all the
stories. The one about one far-away year when the citadel of Timişoara
was conquered by the Ottomans, followed by the one about the Austro-
Hungarian architecture and cultural life, but also the one about the
Unification day between Banat Region and Romania, sealed by the
instauration of the Romanian administration in Timiş-Torontal county.
It's the place where you can see life as it was yesterday and as it is
nowadays. From the very place where things actually happened, right
here.
